North Carolina kept their postseason chances alive with a three-goal first half that paved the way to a much-needed win against New York Red Bulls II, 3-0.
Recently North Carolina FC and the New York Red Bulls II
agreed to a hastily arranged neutral site game in place of two separately canceled
fixtures against Loudoun United FC. The reason was that Loudon United had to
cancel their remaining games after some of their staff members were tested positive
for COVID-19.
NCFC took control of the match early on as midfielder Andre Fortune was
brought down in the penalty area by Jake LaCava. Fortune stepped up to the
penalty spot and converted his sixth goal of the regular season in the 12th
minute.
Benjamin Speas then struck in the 26th minute as he
tucked home a first-time finish from the center of the penalty center after
Pecka had driven in from the right and cut back an excellent low cross for
Speas to knock home.
However, John Tolkin mistakenly added an own goal three
minutes in stoppage time in the first half to put NCFC up by three. Newly
acquired goalkeeper Luca Lewis recorded three saves in the loss to provide the
lone bright spot for the Red Bulls.
The New York Red Bulls II will finish their season with a home match against Hartford Athletic on October 4 at 5:00 pm EST
