New York Red Bulls have announced that winger Josh Sims will not have his loan extended and he will return to his English club Southampton. The 23-year-old was set to stay for the 2020 MLS season but since has been forced back to the UK due to the stoppage and the COVID-19 pandemic.
"In light of the ongoing affects of the global pandemic and all of the uncertainties that remain, we understand Josh's wishes to be closer to home and have come to an agreement with Southampton to recall the player," said Sporting Director Denis Hamlett.
Sims joined New York Red Bulls in the 2019 season and played in seven games while also scoring one goal. New York had seemingly been interested in bringing in the English winger full time but now it appears as if they will need to look domestically.
New York does will have to dig deep for winger options. After Florian Valot and Daniel Royer, the team will have to match player skills to fill the position. There is a possibility of promoting a player from New York Red Bulls II but that will remain to be seen.
New York returns to action in the MLS is Back tournament which starts in July 11th against Atlanta United FC.
