New York Red Bulls will be participating in the first Leagues Cup between MLS and Liga MX and the team has been drawn into the East 4 bracket against New England Revolution and Atletico San Luis of Liga MX. The competition is meant to continue the long-standing competitive rivalry between the two leagues and potentially generate more fans in the process.
New York was ranked fourth in MLS and seeded accordingly. Only the MLS Cup Champion LAFC and combined points leaders of Liga MX Pachuca will receive byes to the knockout round. The teams will play in a World Cup-style round robin tournament with a knockout stage to follow.
The Red Bulls were seeded for the competition by being one of the top 15 teams in the league, having ranked fourth. All teams from both leagues will compete in the competition but the rankings allow for potentially more favorable match-ups. New York will avoid teams such as Club America, Pumas, Chivas and Monterrey.
The Leagues Cup will begin on July 21st and run until August 19th. There will be a break in the MLS season and winning the competition will guarantee a club a place in the Concacaf Champions League.
