Long-time New York Red Bulls back-up goalkeeper Ryan Meara will be staying with the team after signing a new contract according to the team. It is a two-year deal with an option for a third in 2025, bringing him to well over a decade with the club by the conclusion of the terms.
"Ryan has proved to be a great goalkeeper, great leader and a great teammate within the locker room," said Sporting Director Denis Hamlett.
Meara was part of the 2012 MLS Superdraft and ended up being a starter after injuries to other starting keepers in the 2011 season. Meara proved himself more than competent, solidifying the starting role before falling to injuries himself. From there the rise of Luis Robles left him on the sidelines, playing more with the USL New York Red Bulls II team and going out on loan with NYCFC as well.
Over the years he has played more of a behind-the-scenes role with players and coaches commending Meara's attitude and how he has been a great lift for younger talent. Now 31 years-old, Meara has become a senior statesman with the club, having experienced the massive overhaul to one of the youngest squads in the league.
"He has an exceptional attitude and works hard every day to help the club reach his goals," said head coach Gerhard Struber.
This past season Meara sat behind Carlos Coronel who appears to be remaining at the club in a starting role for 2023.
