Red Bulls Name Troy Lesesne Assistant Coach

To fill the vacancy created when former assistant Bradley Carnell left to be the head coach of MLS expansion side St. Louis City SC, the New York Red Bulls added Troy Lesesne to Gerhard Struber’s coaching staff, the club announced today. Lesesne has joined New York at their Florida Camp in IMG Academy.

Lesesne, a West Columbia, South Carolina native, most recently served as Head Coach and Technical Director of the United Soccer League Championship club New Mexico United. He was named New Mexico’s first head coach and technical director when the club entered the USL in 2018. During Lesesne’s three-year stint with New Mexico, he accumulated a 34-29-26 record with two playoff appearances and was named 2020 USL Co-Coach of the Year.

“Troy is a coach with smart ideas and big ambitions to go deep in our identity,” said Head Coach Gerhard Struber. “He has experience in different areas and will be able to help the team to develop in many directions.”

Lesesne began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the College of Charleston from 2005 through 2014. During his tenure, he was named one of the top-20 assistant coaches in the nation by CollegeSoccerNews.com in 2011 and 2013. He was also selected to the inaugural United Soccer Coaches NCAA “Top 30 Under 30” coaches program in 2013. Lesesne holds a United States Soccer Federation “A” coaching license and an NSCAA Premier Diploma.

“I'd like to thank Kevin, Denis, Gerhard, and the entire Red Bull Soccer International Group for this tremendous opportunity,” said Lesesne. “This club has established an incredible identity and winning culture over many years, and it’s an honor to be part of this coaching staff. I’m committed to working tirelessly to help Gerhard, our staff, and our players in any way I can.”

Lesesne's career then jumped from the collegiate level to the professional level, spending four seasons with USL Championship club Charleston Battery as an assistant coach. He assisted in the team qualifying for back-to-back playoffs in 2016 and 2017 and advancing to round 16 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in the club's inaugural season, which was the furthest for any lower league team.

Injury Update: Marcucci and Vanzeir Shine; Morgan Still Recovering

photo by Matt Kremkau by Anthony J. Merced As preseason winds down with one game left to play, the players ready and available for Sandro Schwarz become more clear. Dante Vanzeir, who ended his 2023 with a back injury, has seemingly found the form the team hoped to get last year and goalkeeper AJ Marcucci looks ready to prove himself as an MLS goalkeeper with a solid performance on Wednesday. While there are positives from players coming back from injury, one player who still appears to be looking for fitness is Lewis Morgan. The 2022 top scorer for the Red Bulls, saw himself on the sidelines for most of 2023. Now, in preseason, he finds himself still working towards fitness according to head coach Sandro Schwarz. "We don't make risks for him," said Schwarz when asked if Lewis would feature in the team's last preseason game. "He's only in team training since two days. Tomorrow we have recovery training and on Friday one team session on the field. He will be t...

EDITORIAL - As the Curtain Rises, Will Promises made finally be Kept?

photo by Matt Kremkau by Garry Redman As I began my eighth season as a soccer correspondent with the Red Bull News Network, I promised my editor and readers that I would be more of a hawk and less of a dove. I'm giving the team more of a critical eye this season and the seasons to come. I made that promise for many reasons, but chief among them were the promises made by this franchise, which were kept from its fanbase. 28 seasons of promises. 28 seasons of them left unfulfilled.  At first glance, it looked like the New York Red Bulls were finally making the moves that would put them firmly in the category of an elite side worthy of being called a "contender." But before you go out and celebrate, please be aware that the supporters have heard this before: In 2019... In 2020... And in 2023... So you can see why the fans responded to those announcements with a collected and dismissive shrug. The response from the fanbase was more of a "Yeah? Really? Show us.". If y...
