New York Red Bulls Head of Sport Kevin Thelwell has been linked to the vacant Sporting Director job at Newcastle United according to the Daily Mail. The northern English club was recently purchased by Saudi Arabian backed Public Investment Fund and is expected to have the most resources of any team in Europe to pay for top talent.
Thelwell has Premier League experience with Wolverhampton Wanderers who returned to the England's top flight years ago and committed to an aggressive transfer strategy that has bore fruit. Thelwell joined New York Red Bulls in 2020 in 2020 and has taken up the job of rebuilding one of the younger teams in the league. This season they are pushing to qualify for the MLS Cup playoffs with a mix of academy talent and smart loanees.
The move could be one driven by finances. Public Investment Fund could make an offer that no one can refuse and Thelwell would be well within is right to accept. Such a move could also stifle the progress New York has made, especially since Red Bull Global Soccer still doesn't have a replacement for Ralf Rangnick.
