Struber: Trophies are the Goal but Will Need Time

New York Red Bulls are not adhering to the notion that they are development team without aspirations of winning. Head coach Gerhard Struber spoke about that with the media on Friday, cementing the idea that the Red Bulls are focused on winning trophies and not just developing young talent.

"What we have in our long term goals is clear," said Struber. "We will bring trophies. This is not only my goal, this is the goal from the whole club. For that I think we need time for integration, we need time for development and in the end we have the right to speak about trophies. I think for me, for my whole coaching, the big duty to bring every single player up the right way."

New York will go into the season with one of the younger sides in MLS but one that has promising potential. Players like Cameron Harper, Caden Clark and Wikelman Carmona will join players that seem like veterans in their early 20's like Youba Diarra and Tom Edwards. European experience will clash with development in the hopes for a mixture that will lead to league success.

The Red Bull high press is also seemingly getting a revamp under Struber. The hope is that the young, impressionable, players will soak up the system and produce the high-energy play that the team became accustomed to delivering five years earlier. 

"Right now we have talent, we have experience players and right now it is my responsibility to bring the boys together," said Struber. "In this way, what we need for 2021 is that everyone is ready to develop and also that we can bring the right results."

There has been frustration during preseason with the cancellation of games due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, Struber is confident that the team will be ready to deliver on his and the organization's vision come mid-April.

Tolkin and Edelman Called into Olympic Camp

Merced New York Red Bulls homegrown players John Tolkin and Daniel Edelman have been called into the US Olympic training camp ahead of friendlies later in the month. Tolkin, 21 years-old, has been called into Gregg Berhalter's camps in the past while Edelman will be making his first trip to the national level. Tolkin, now entering his fifth year as a New York Red Bulls player, has experience with the national team going all the way back to 2018 with the US Under 17 team. In 2023, he played four games for the Under 23 team and four games for the main national team as well. While he isn't a first choice pick yet, Tolkin's consistency hasn't gone unnoticed by US Soccer scouts and another solid showing could see him inch closer to a starting position.
