RB Leipzig will reportedly lose their top defender Dayot Upamecano to rivals Bayern Munich this summer. The news comes from David Ornstein of the Athletic and signifies a major move that could see Leipzig's chances of remaining a competitor sink in the coming seasons.
Upamecano has been one of the most sought after players on Leipzig. The 22-year-old Frenchman had been linked to several English Premier League clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester United but it is Bundesliga kings Bayern who seem to have won the race. Upamecano has played 102 games for the East German club and been a major reason for their Champions League success. Now, it appears that he will continue his form with Munich who are interested in refreshing their defense.
"I was always convinced we had a very good concept," said Bayern Sporting Director Hasan Salihamidzic. "We presented him with our vision of his career at FC Bayern. During the past week I spoke to everyone involved again. At the end of a long process, the player, his family and his management were convinced that FC Bayern was the right partner for them."
Leipzig won't be left without options. There are still players like Ibrahim Konate, Lukas Klostermann and Marcel Halstenberg for manager Julian Nagelsmann to consider. However, the loss of Upamecano will force them into the market for young options. While they have been successful in the past, mining young players is a dangerous game and, as we've seen with Borussia Dortmund, there are times when it won't always succeed.
