"I feel right at home here in Leipzig," said Upamecano. "We had good conversations with Oliver Mintzlaff, Markus Krosche and Julian Nagelsmann, which showed me that extending the contract was the right decision for me to make."
Upamecano has been part of a very successful defense along with Willi Orban, Ibrahim Konate and other. Despite being only 21-years-old, the defender has already played in over 100 games for Leipzig and contributed to two Champions League qualifying runs. All of this while also making an impression on the French national team which has yet to call him up to the main team.
The signing puts the onus on other teams should they want to sign away Upamecano. Arsenal FC were the most interested and were linked for some time. However, their frugal spending will almost surely eliminate them now that Upamecano has extended his stay. AC Milan is still in the running but they will more than likely have to wait another season to steal way the defender.
"I have been in Leipzig for over three years now," said Upamecano. "I have continued to improve alongside the team's development. I want to carry on developing personally, and I think Julian Nagelsmann is a coach that can bring me to the next level."
