"I assume that he will also play for us next season," said RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff to Kicker. "We are in good talks to find a solution to prevent him from leaving on a free transfer next year."
Much like Timo Werner before him, Upamecano has all the negotiating power. Many clubs are interested in him and his representation can leverage that into a better deal at Leipzig. Werner was able to not only get a better financial deal for himself, but also restrict Leipzig from setting a price too high that he couldn't depart the club when he felt a change was needed. Expectations are that Upamecano will do the same.
Currently, Leipzig does have a 60 million Euro release clause for the French defender. That fee has been a stumbling block for teams like Arsenal who have had their financial belts tightened more so than usual due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"It worked out with Timo Werner," said Mintzlaff. "I assume that we will do our homework with regard to Dayot as well."
RB Leipzig will hope to have the situation wrapped up before restarting the UEFA Champions League next month.
